Black Widow is one of the Marvel movies that should have been released before Avengers Endgame, in my opinion, as Natasha Romanoff’s character had a lot to offer in terms of a backstory as well as more in-depth into her character and how she became more ‘human’.
As the current Marvel movie releases are structured for phase four of the MCU, where the movies are going in the direction of a multiverse. If you’ve had the chance to watch Loki and WandaVision, you have a fair idea of the direction the MCU is moving in and also created room for other movies and characters, like Yelena (Natasha’s sister).
As it may have seemed, Black Widow is probably one of the worst movies Marvel have released (in my humble opinion)as we barely learn much about Romanoff’s past- other than that she had a secret family she was avoiding for 21 years of her life.
The writers did a poor job showcasing more of Natasha’s character as she died in Avengers Endgame and decided to focus more on her sister Yelena, as we saw more energy and development in her character of which she is now a favourite of many MCU fans.
Black Widows stand-alone film was long overdue and the movie could have given her character more energy than we expected from a Red-Room assassin. Many fans, like myself, were hoping to also have seen how Natasha crossed paths with Hawkeye. But we were left with a somewhat slow-burn film with cheesy pick-up lines the MCU throws at its female lead superheroes.
In all aspects, I do respect the work the actors did and what they put in to make the characters more alive to us fans. Let's hope they do better with Yelena's character in phase 4 of the MCU and that they leave the cheesy jokes behind.
