Why are young people pretending to love work?

Everyone has the desire to be successful, but the idea of success has become toxic that people who work 9–5 jobs are seen as having no desire to be rich and successful just because they aren’t their own boss. But why does everyone want to be an entrepreneur all of the sudden?

According to a study from Phoneix University, 63% of 20 somethings want to be entrepreneurs and start their own businesses. With an abundance of information available on the internet sometimes we as people aren’t happy with where we are in life or we desire to have more than what we have. Social media has contributed to this hustle culture ideology as people who are self-proclaimed CEOs boast about having the ability to do what they want and where they want- retire young. There’s a part of Twitter that everyone knows as ‘LLC Twitter’, due to the fact that when someone tweets about spending their monthly salary and treating themselves for a special occasion, someone will be in the comment section and trying to advise them to invest and plan for the future.

But do we know if we’ll live to see tomorrow?

With the craze of self-improvement books as well as “successful entrepreneurs”, holding seminars for those who want to be released from the shackles of employment and live life like a boss. What people don’t understand is running a business is not for everyone especially if you aren’t passionate. Some people have created businesses that sell health products such as diet plans and shakes but are overweight. How is your business module a success if you look like lard?

Hustle culture is making young adults stressed, depressed, and overwhelmed with life before it even begins. Just because you saw a friend succeed doesn't mean you will. Sometimes the best thing you can do is just support the people you know who are succeeding instead of competing as it will just make you sad and miserable. People need to realize running a business isn’t like a pack of cake mix, the ingredients are there but you have to put in the time and effort to mix them together or it’ll all spill out and that will just be wasted effort.

I am not saying you should not try to run your own business but you need to stop idolizing people that say they work 3 jobs back to back and love it because that isn’t true. Why would anyone want to glamourize employment when we just get jobs to survive and cater to certain lifestyles we wish to have.

I believe people that work regular jobs like doctors, teachers, bus drivers, etc. don’t get enough recognition as people seem to have some ounce of disrespect for those in 9–5 jobs. Without doctors, influencers wouldn’t have the BBL’s that make them money. I have seen certain influencers that got famous for the most ridiculous things and still have the audacity to say someone that works a day job doesn’t have the same mindset as them and having a friendship/relationship just wouldn’t work???

People need to stop fanaticizing over hustle culture as 9–5 jobs provide income security whereas being an entrepreneur you aren’t always guaranteed to earn more, especially if you have a failing business plan. This has young people regretting certain choices they made that may have affected them financially long term. As a business student, no you don’t need a degree to start a business but you need passion and the mindset or you are bound for failure.
