Is This Generation Too Sensitive?

It’s becoming hard to keep track of what is appropriate to say online as years go by, as millennials are deemed overly sensitive.

Throughout the pandemic, people are starting to become more aware of their actions as well as what they say. We have had a lot of free time just to be by ourselves and reflect- but is it just overthinking?

The idea of this generation being sensitive is it seems as if they have become fragile because of social media due to satirical jokes made in numerous tv shows that are taken too seriously when in hindsight most are just a representation of how society actually is.

A good example would be South Park, as it is one of the most provocative unfiltered animated cartoon series to-date and is popular among a certain audience. However, some people often take personal offense from such shows and express their views on social media and often seek attention or merely want to feel as if it was directed towards a certain demographic.

The show talks about many issues ranging from how our generation deals with anxiety by using social media excessively as the solution to why they treat people in a disgusting manner or not take their opinions into consideration. The whole show is based on comedic satire and yes it isn’t for everyone but why do people take certain aspects of such tv shows and victimize themselves.

This is where cancel culture comes in. If two people fall out and disagree online i.e. Twitter, people often have to pick a side, and I’m not talking about cancel culture on people that actually deserved it, but basic petty things such as one preference in music or their favorite musician. For example, we are all aware of Tory Lanez shooting Megan Thee Stallion. Now if someone expresses their opinion that they like Tory Lanez’s music but don’t support what he did to Megan (separating the artist from the music), the said person will receive hate and be canceled on that particular platform just for expressing his music taste… nothing more and will get bullied online for it. So the question is, are millennials too sensitive or does each individual think their opinion is more valid than the next person without respecting their views?

From my understanding, cancel culture is more or less mob mentality and people act like it is a counterproductive way of solving issues. Millennials have this idea fixated that online bullying gets them the change they want for a particular cause but it isn’t the most reasonable solution as what you say online can have an impact on your life in the future.

In all honesty, this generation isn’t too sensitive, however, just more politically and socially aware as well as accepting of everyone e.g. LGBTQ+ community and environmental issues. What we can learn overall is to be respectful and also listen to other people. We do more talking than listening and this is where the issue is. The more we understand the better.
